Just back from the island & what a weekend!
The weather down there for the past 7 days wouldn't have given the team much help with getting race ready. we went down to watch practice last sunday & it was warm. On friday we almost melted watching the first day of practice- even with our new hats-so the data on tyre wear & set up would not have been useful for the weekend.

Typical of race weekends, the weather turned cold & windy, so different conditions on each test day & practice day.
It was fan-bloody-tastic to see Chris in Superpole & my friends moved sideways away from me during the early laps of each race as i cheered like a lunatic. If nothing else to take away from the weekend, it showed that Chris has the potential to do things with this bike. Turn 4 caused a lot of carnage this weekend- spooked Xaus enough that he couldn't get on the bike.

Chris i hope you are feeling well & not too battered. Next race buys you some time to recover.

ps. can people on the forum send out bike karma to the bastard thief who stole my partners helmet- didn't even leave their one for him to use to ride home

Hey Marg .... Bomber said he met your partner down there and he's a big unit. It's very stupid bastard thief that steals a big unit's helmet, so he'll trip up somewhere ... the stupid ones always do.

Scans showed nothing broken and no ligament damage ... badly bruised and very sore, but he will be OK. Can't help feeling he was pushing too hard on a bike that's not totally sorted ... but hell, he's a racer!!!

Late news ... Seems there could be some ligamant damage ... have to wait and see

Great to hear there is no broken bones or ligament damage - and yeah he looked like he was pushing that bike past its limit,

I read somewhere that there was a problem with some gears and that's what caused the crash.
It's good to hear nothing is broken!

Hi to all,

just recently join the forum. I saw the race on tv and imo Chris made a hell of a race. But I think due the unperformance bike he was force to go beyond the limits.

Hope you recover well and see you in Portimão

He was pushing too hard in race 1 ... but in race 2 there was a gear box factor

Hi people I also watched the race, however, though it was in the middle of the night! But for my passion motorcycle-racing nothing is to hard! ;-)

I think Chris has done everything he could! But the Kawa!? No nice words for it! It reminds me extremely of last year!
I hope that Chris and the Kawa-Boys can turn the Kawa in a weapon again!

Greetings from Germany

Believe it or not the following is an explanation for the PI Race Weekend.

Superpole 2 - Not sufficient fuel which caused the electronic problems that was reported.

Race 1 - Mechanical failure in frontend going into Honda Corner.

Race 2 - False Neutral on corner entry at Lukie Heights which is a gearshift problem in the box. Outcome is no engine braking on a critical corner entry.

Hope that explains things a bit better and we hope that things happen in 3's and that is it for the time being.

Chris is quite OK but has suspected medial ligament damage and has a further MRI this afternoon to confirm the extent of that damage and plan a course of recovery. He only has three weeks until he goes over for the next race so lets hope he will be OK. Will update when further info available.

Hopefully not ligament damage and he can have enough movement out of it for Portamoa. Fingers crossed

Hi Bjorn- welcome to our life! Almost all the rounds of SBK & GP have us sitting up in front of the box until the wee hours, that's why we get so excited when the round is here.

As for the injury, i suppose medial is the ligament to injure. Hopefully R.I.C.E & physio can have him back in the saddle in time for the next round.

I agree with Bomber about things coming in 3's. It was a good weekend of close racing & i'm looking forward to Chris being among them as the season progresses. You know my irrational dislike of Toseland, so as long as Chris is able to rough him up i'll be happy.

Thanks for the updates Magoo & Bomber.

There's a new blog on the homepage where Chris talks about what went wrong.

Race 1: Braking hard and deep into the corner trying to get back with the group he was in. But the front wheel hit a bump and bottomed out the suspension resulting in a crash.

Race 2: The gearbox hit a false neutral when shifting back from 4th to 3rd gear and after that locked up the rear wheel.

Let's hope for a quick recovery in time for the Portimao weekend!

Hey guys just returned home today. Was in PI Sat/Sun and had a blast (apart from the wind burn and Chris crashing out in both races), fantastic racing.

Was great to see Chris pushing hard from the start (I was jumping up and down like a wee school girl at the start of both races) , pitty about the end results but hopefully something can be learned. You could see he was pushing that bike hard and obviousely it still needs a lot of work. However seeing him up there got my hopes up for some exciting races this year.

Glad to hear your doing alright Chris, wishing you a speedy recovery, looking forward to Partimao.

Just caught the race here in the U.S. Late last night. a re-air showing. Glad to see Chris is in good shape post crash... it didn't look so good on t.v. My question that doesn't seem to be addressed is : WHY WAS THERE NO AIR FENCE WHERE CHRIS CRASHED ??? Or sand trap area ?? I don't have the option to watch it again... but I don't remember seeing either in place. Seems like Phillip Island would have addressed this already. Hopefully they will now.
Good Luck Chris... Best wishes from the States.

Yes in answer to Sauber there is a catch pit before the tyre wall but no air fence. In defence of PI Circuit this is not considered a dangerous area normally otherwise the Riders Safety Committee would have addressed the problem. As indicated by Chris in his blog, the false neutral and subsequent rear wheel lock up would have contributed to the situation. It was proven by the onboard data that he was at 200kph prior to impact. I am sure that the authorities will look at the accident thoroughly to determine if any further action is necessary. Both MotoGP and Superbike riders consider this circuit as one of the safest on their calender.
